Club History

Lawn bowls in Bridport began in 1921 as a sub-section of the Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club, the Bowls section being to the South Dorset League in 1922 and affiliated to the Dorset County Bowling Association in 1926

The bowls section became independent in 1929 and moved to its present site in 1930 on land donated by the then, Club President, Mr W S Edwards.

The ladies section of the club was established in 1965 and combined with the mens  section to form a unified club in 1992.

The original clubhouse was erected in 1930 and, with modifications, remained in use until 2005 when it was demolished and replaced with a larger more purpose built pavilion.

The club is fortunate in that due to the enthusiasm of the founding members, it now occupies an attractive site close to the town centre between St. Mary’s church and the river Brit in a designated conservation area..

Club records from 1930 indicate that the original playing area of 16,076 sq ft. Was laid with 12” sq Cumberland turfs 1.5 “ thick at a cost of £750. An automatic sprinkler system was installed in 1993. This same playing area is currently recognised as one of the best in the South West.

Club membership is about 100, amongst the members are a number of qualified umpires, markers and instructors. Both sections of the club over the years have provided officers for their respective County organisations as well as achieving success at County, National and International levels.

The ladies section in recent years, have been regular competitors at Leamington with a major achievement of reaching the final of the 2006 TLH Top Club.
